As the economic problems became increasingly worse for the Indians their feelings of resentment and nationalism did as well. In 1857 there was word that the cartridges of the sepoys(indian soldiers) were greased with beef and pork fat. This disgusted both Hindus and Muslims because the Hindus consider the cow sacred and the Muslims that did not eat pork. They refused to accept the cartridges from a commander and were jailed. The next day, the sepoys rebelled. They went to Delhi and captured it. From there the rebellion spread to northern and central India. This is called the Sepoy Mutiny. The British and the sepoys tried to kill one another. It took the East India Company over a year to regain control of India. As a result of the Sepoy Mutiny, the British government took command of India. The mutiny also increased the distrust between the Indians and the British.
