China had resisted foreign influence for centuries and were ethnocentric. Ethnocentric means that they thought they were superior. China was able to resist trading for so long because it was highly self-sufficient. For many years, the only place China would allow foreigners to do business was at the southern port of Guangzhou. The trade at Guangzhou was in China's favor because they earned more for it's exports than spend on their imports.
