From 1757 until 1858 the East India Company was the leading power in India. The company had it's own army. It was led by British officers and run by sepoys(Indian soldiers). The sepoy army was referred as ''a delicate and dangerous machine, which a little mismanagement may easily turn against us'' by the governor of Bombay.
